Defensible Space and the new 0-5 Zone
Just a reminder, in addition to the 0-30 and 30-100 foot defensible space zones, starting January 2024 there will be a new 0-5 foot zone required by law for us to maintain surrounding our homes. Education about the Defensible Space Guidelines is a primary purpose of Firewise Communities.
Insurance Discounts
New Rules Benefit California Property Owners in Firewise USA Sites.
What CA Property Owners Need to Know.
Through a new set of rules, dubbed Safer from Wildfires, the California Department of Insurance (CDI) has required insurance companies doing business in the state to provide discounts for residential property insurance when policyholders reduce their wildfire risks.
For more information,
view this link from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
The California FAIR Plan has offered a 10% discount on policies in a
participating Firewise Community since May 2018.
It is now offering two more wildfire hardening discounts:
one for Protecting the Structure
and another for Protecting the Immediate Surroundings of the dwelling.

When applied, these discounts will reduce the wildfire portion of the policy’s premium by 10% and 5%, respectively. Depending on your level of wildfire risk, this can be a large component of your overall premium. Contact your broker to find out what this means for your premium, how to qualify, and when you could receive a discount.
